always beginning again
This was the title of today's entry of 'A Year With Thomas Merton'. I have posted the page below so you can read it if you want.
It is a simple idea but one that I didn't really think about until many years ago when i came across the concept of 'honnin myo', a Japanese term which loosely means 'starting from now'. We probably don't think enough about this possibility and instead, focus on our past failures, regrets etc.
There are few of us who wouldn't turn back the clock and make a few different choices along the way, but we can't. What we can do is to start again, not next week or year, but from now .. and now .... and .... now.
So whether it is that your prayer life has slipped or you have abandoned a diet, you can change that right now, exactly as you are. I am tempted to bring 'repentance' into this as it is a term that is often misrepresented and which literally means to turn or to change rather than beat ourselves up for our mistakes. But anyway, that is a blog for another day ... so remember ... you can begin again .. right now .. right here
