The following are some books that I have read which I found inspiring. Not all are 'religious' books and of various denominations. My main focus in reading is around Theosis, silence and contemplation. I hope you find this list useful and will keep adding to it.
'Upon This Mountain' - Mary McCormack OCD
A short book of around 70 pages. This is written by a Carmelite nun and 'goes straight to the essence of spiritual life'. While I am not especially drawn to the Carmelites, two of the best books I have read have been written by them. This one is easy to read with short chapters which go to the heart of the matter.

'The Mountain of Silence' - Kyriacos C. Markides
The author is a sociologist who has links with Cyprus and an interest in Christian Mysticism. Taking the opportunity of a work trip to Cyprus he arranges to meet with Father Maximus who returned to Cyprus from Mount Athos. An interesting book with some fascinating insights during discussions with Father Maximus

'Day of a Stranger' - Thomas Merton
Written by the monk who loved silence but just couldn't stop writing. This is a thin booklet written in response to a question of what a day in his life looked like. In the usual Merton manner it is quite poetic and insightful with some photos from around the monastery and his hermitage. It is out of print and may be difficult to find. Places like Abe Books might be your best bet.
