confidence in God
"What is the use of praying, if at the very moment of prayer we have so little confidence in God that we are busy planning our own kind of answer to our prayer?" - Thomas Merton (Thoughts in solitude)
this is a small and important point, but one that can be very difficult to follow through on. We have all lived in society for a long time, or a fairly long time, and have developed strategies to deal with most situations, or at least to give us signposts as to how to do so.
It can be hard then, very hard, to let go of our strategies and plans to deal with situations and to hand all of that trust to God. If we hedge our bets with a halfway solution; ie 'trusting God' but having a back up plan, can we really say that we trust and believe in God?
As with many things in christian contemplation, we can't expect to go from trusting ourselves to trusting God totally overnight. It is a steady process that can take many years and we may never even fully arrive there but the journey is the most important thing.
note - trusting God totally does NOT mean ignoring common sense. Driving at 100mph without a seat belt on is not trusting God, but acting on our own stupidity!
