Father Galaktion - Mount Athos

As contemplatives, there are no 'heroes' such as we might have in a football team. We are human though and may find that certain people help to inspire or ground us. Often these are saints or perhaps contemplative writers such as Thomas Merton or Richard Rohr.

If I find myself getting 'lost' in some of the more complex or even routine aspects of this life, I find the three clips below of Father Galktion from the 'Mount Athos' film very useful. He leads a very simple life and the one thing that strikes me about him is his humility. Also, his quiet sense of humour is something that is sometimes a little lacking in 'religious life' despite the fact that humour can warm those around us. These are three short sections of the main video. I have started each video at the beginning of the appropriate section but it will run to the end of the film if you don't stop it.

1 - An introduction to Father Galaktion

Here he discusses coming to Mount Athos and the basics of his life there. I have started the film a little bit early as the look on the face of the visitor in the grey t shirt when he has a drink of ouzo always amuses me

2 - In the kitchen

Father Galaktion in his very rudimentary kitchen further discussing life on Mount Athos

3 - In his 'main' room

Perhaps my favourite part. Further discussion and a very cute cat. Note how cold the room is when he coughs though. He is certainly hardier than me, that's for sure!
