going back to the source
People often talk about 'original sin' and the fall of Adam. This is thought to represent a point where people started to turn away from God (which is what 'sin' actually means). From this comes the belief that we are all sinners and that God forgives our sins. This is all well and good but it can leave some people feeling very negative about themselves; guilty even. Are we condemned to be 'sinners' all of our life?
Repentance (turning things around) and faith are important here of course, but there is one other thing that we rarely think about when we think of ourselves as 'sinners' following Adam's fall.
In the first book of the bible, Genesis, it states "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good". This is an important point in that we haven't always 'been sinners' but our very origin is extremely positive.
Through prayer and contemplation, we can move back towards this very source by becoming “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). It won't be an instant 'revelation' for the vast majority of us, but a slow persistent process that at times may even feel like a grind. The point though is to point in the right direction each moment of our life as best we can and to return to our original union with God.
