the imperfect
I start most days by reading the relevant date from Thomas Merton's diary. In today's he muses about the devil and our own nature trying to persuade us that we have to be perfect in order to 'have faith'.
This probably hasn't been helped by the church and senior religious figures acting as morality police for so many years. They will also be the first ones to point to the bible for support.
if we look at the bible though and who Jesus spent most of his time with, it wasn't the wealthy, well educated and polite people. He 'hung out' a lot of his time with often what these same people would call 'sinners' .. tax collectors, prostitutes, thieves, non believers and other outcasts.
It seems quite clear then that we don't have to be 'perfect' to have faith and as a popular song goes, you can just 'come as you are' to faith. Today seems as good a place as any to start.
