light through the trees
October is nearly done and we start the slow and grey drift towards that all too expensive and consumerist event that is Christmas. Yes, I know we should celebrate the birth of Christ but the way in which society does so seems almost the opposite of Christ's teachings. Enough of that for now though.
We have now entered the season where trees start to drop their leaves, revealing more of the sky than before. When the leaves are there, do we miss the sky? and when we can see the clear sky through the bare branches, do we really miss the leaves?
Life is a bit like that too. We don't miss what we don't see (usually), but when things go, we do miss them, for a while anyway.
Prayer can be a bit like that too. If we miss prayers for a while, we might think little of it, perhaps even glad of the extra time we now have. When we do go back to prayer though, there is often a feeling of coming home.
This is my experience at least and you may have picked up that I am not always as 'contemplative' as I could be. None of us are perfect though and the aim is to become more so over time.
Ultimately, I must remind myself that prayer comes before everything and should take priority. As a previous blog said, starting from now.
